Infantas, 1855.Portrait Frontis., xii, 852 p. ; 22 cm. Much more than a
dictionary; a reasoned philosophy of government, and its difficulties in
South America, by a convinced republican who wrote to instill a spirit of
democracy in his countrymen, and all Spanish speakers. He was aware of the
tendencies, in Latin America, already obvious, civil war and for strongman
or dictatorial rule to develop. As an enlightened democrat he hoped to
support democratic impulses among the people by publishing this work.12 Pp.
of subscribers at rear.
Quoted by Eudardo Posada
Carbo in his essay "Guerra Civil? Guerra Contra Los Civiless ? Violencia
Generalizada? /Sobre la naturaleza del conflucto interno en Colombia . An

Account of the Origin of Printing, with Biographical Notices of the
Printers of England, from Caxton to the close of the Sixteenth Century: A
Series of Ancient and Modern Alphabets, and Domesday Characters. London,
1824. 2 vols. First Edition. Bigmore & Wyman: "One of the few standard
works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the
most familiar... It abounds with information of a very useful character,
spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour, and freshness of
the author... The type, never larger than brevier, sometimes is as small as
pearl... The second volume may be described as practical, in
contradistinction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description
of types, directions for composing, for press and warehouse work, &c. It is
particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained for it
great estimation. Altogether the volume is a congeries of practical
miscellanies of the most interesting character. Whatever its defects and
shortcomings, it has long since become, and deservedly, a printer's
classic, and one in which the youngest apprentice as well as the most
experienced journeyman finds matter of an amusing as well as useful
nature." It was issued simultaneously in 3 formats: 12mo, with text having
a plain ruled border; 8vo (large paper) with a typographical border about
the text;, and 4to (largest paper, called "Roxburghe copies"). This is a
copy of the 8vo Large Paper edition. Lowndes, v. 5, p. 1215. This copy is
Very Good or better in the original boards, cloth backstrips and printed

IN ST. DOMINGO. Boston: Crosby, Nichols and Company, 1854. Portrait
Frontis., blank leaf, [ii] and 124 pp. 8vo. gray/blue blind-stamped boards.
Toussaint was born in Haiti to Catholic slaves. When his employers fled
Haiti after a slave uprising he came with them to New York. He was taught
to read and write, and apprenticed to a hair stylist. As a hairdresser he
worked for many important New Yorkers. When Mr. Berard died, his widow
offered to giive him his freedom but instead, he supported her until her
death. Poor investments had made her a pauper and she had no means other
of support. Tousaint founded, together with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton one
N.Y.'s first orphanages, helped raise funds for the city's first Catholic
cathedral, and is buried under the great altar of St. John's. He has a
record of unusually caring behavior, including staying behind to care for
sick people during a yellow fever epiidemic. He is an active candidate for
sainthood at this writing. Very Good in gray/blue blind-stamped boards.
