This title has not yet been added to my catalog of Japanese illustrated
books, and is first offered, here.

GEKKO, OGATA AND ?, ILLUS; MIKI TEIICHI[Miki, Aika], Author, Trans. by G.
TAKAHASHI: PICTORIAL DESCRIPTIONS OF FAMOUS PLACES IN JAPAN. VOL. 1. Meiji
20, 12th month [1888], Tokyo, Kyu-shundo-[Pub.]. [All published?]. 38
leaves, 76 Pp., 25 x 17.4 cm. string binding. All text in Japanese with
full translation into English. Two title pages, one in each language at
opposite ends of the book. Bound Japanese style, English title label on the
front board, Japanese [partly torn off] on the rear board. 2 Title Pages.
10 double page color woodcuts of views. Of these 7 are by Ogata Gekko. They
are: Asakusa Temple, Mount Yoshino [with cherry blossoms], Yokohama, The
Golden Temple; The Kamo River, The Island of E, Tokyo. There are three
double page woodcuts in an earlier, Nanga[Southern Chinese] style, of The
Cataract of Kegon, Mount Tsukuba, Island of Itsuku. Gekko's works are
extremely atmospheric and full of fog, shade and light, and use Western
perspective. The three Nanga views are dramatic and discursive in the best
Chinese painting sense, however I have not been able to find the signature
of the artist, who may have lived some time before this book was published.
He is not noted in Mitchell, Ryerson, or BM. An unusual Japanese/English
transitional Ehon.. Unlocated at RLIN/OCLC,COPAC, KVK, Diet Library,
Cambridge Cooperative Romaji library. There is a copy of this Volume I only
at Harvard. Wraps somewhat worn, a very light water stain without margin in
the upper outer pages in the rear. It is hard to find unless you are
specifically looking for it. A Very Good copy. $1250.00
