The first printed effort, to the best of my knowledge, to record
and calendar the public records, undertaken by Agard and after his
death continued by Powell; bound with Powell's useful work on
appeals to Westminster from inferior courts.

2. [EARLY AMERICAN LAW]. The Young Clerk's Vade Mecum: or,
Compleat Law-Tutor, Being a useful Collection of a Great Variety of
the Most Approved Precedents in the Law . . . To which is added A
Collection of English Precedents, Relating to the Office of a
Justice of Peace. Cohen 8207. Re-printed by H[ugh] Gaine, in

preserved, some foxing; sound. [64086 L57L68E] $ 1,250.00

Only American edition of a popular everyman law book printed in
Belfast over much of the 18th century, ably combining brief
introductory commentary with multiple and varied forms supplemented
by sample informations and indictments on matters criminal.

3. [FORM BOOK]. The Pocket Lawyer, and Family Conveyancer . . .
To Which is Added, an Abridged Law Dictionary, and the Fee Bill.

One of several editions of an unusually and well printed work, the
forms printed vertically and surrounded by borders, thus clearly
presented and capable of being easily copied; the brief law
dictionary primarily 'translates' Latin terms.

4. FREEMAN, Samuel. The Town Officer: Or the Power and Duty of
Selectmen . . . And other Town Officers. As Contained in the Laws
of . . . of Massachusetts . . . To which are added, The Power and

An early edition of Freeman's first work, ably discussing the
duties of dozens of officials (including such obscure examples as
deer reeves, provers of butter, and pearl ash inspectors),
anticipating his 45 year career as Massachusetts court clerk.

5. GODARD, A.A. (comp.). Kansas Laws Made Plain, Legal Forms
Prepared for the Use of Farmers, Mechanics and Business Men.

An early edition of what I believe is Jacob's first work (of
eighteen) on the subject he may have known best, local courts, in
which he had served professionally, termed "very successful . . .
and comprehensive" by Holdsworth.

7. PUTZEL, Charles. Commercial Precedents Selected from the
Column of Replies and Decisions of the New York Journal of

9. [SMALL CLAIMS COURT]. Corte Pequena. People's Law School, San
Francisco, 1976. Self stapled wraps, typescript; 12 pages. [43287

An introduction to Small Claims Court, issued by the radical
People's Law School in San Francisco as part of their laudable
program to make the law more accessible to non-lawyers,
particularly minorities; in Spanish.
