~KASTNER, CHARLES~ KRUSI'S DRAWING TEXTILE DESIGNS. NUMBER 1-6 [All?].~
New York, D. Appleton & Co. [1877][Title page]. Identified on cover, in
gilt as follows: Krusi's /Textile Drawing 1-6 / Published by / American
Book Company[.]Oblong, 84 Pp., 19 x 28.5 cm. Kastner is identified as
Director of the Lowell Course of Industrial Art / Massachusetts. Institute
of Technology. Krusi was a life long teacher of art in the American
schools, and also a follower of Pestalozzi. He published many drawing
manuals and teacher's guides ti drawing as well as an appreciation of
Pestalozzi and a privately printed autobiography. This book is a series of
six work books, each with two pages of text divided into two columns and
ten pages of sheets with designs printed at the top [at first] for copying,
followed by a blank page. These grow increasingly large and complex and by
book 5, they cover one page and are in color. In book 6 almost all are in
color, but in this copy they have been enclosed upside down and backwards
in their order. Among the plates there are 7 printed in full color. Most of
these are quite complex versions of paisley patterns. Some first appears
in black and white, and then in color. The color printing is excellent,
full and rich. The paper om which the color prints appear is much finer
than the other paper used. ~This book, under either title is not to be
found in any American library noted at OCLC, CIC, Melvyl, NYP, LNN, YUS,
CRI, Massachusetts Library systems on line; Brown, Newberry, Canadian Union
Catalog; COPAC. As a color plate book it is unknown to both Bennett and
McGrath.~ I suspect that usually the parts were given, one by one to
students who copied the designs and destroyed the book. In part form, it
would be extremely ephemeral. Some of the plates in part 5 are loose, but
they remain in Fine condition with the rest of the book.. The ownership
signature, in pen, of William F. Wallace is found on the front free end
paper. Bound into flexible brown cloth, gilt title on the front board,
Fine. $575.00
