Connecticut based on the research of a long-time leading citizen, by his
widow.  Many photos.  Extensive, often-cited genealogical section.  Geen
cloth (later), gold print on brown field on spine.  Small stain on cover.

edition. Cloth torn on spine, generally worn.  Contents page loose.  Margins
darkened.  Spine split but holding.  Reflections on the progress of the US
and the challenges facing it, particularly in post-Civil War era, by Boston
writer, poet, patron of the arts.  He was known as a supporter of the Museum
of Fine Arts and Boston Public Library.  He dedicated himself to overcoming
New England's ascetic Puritan heritage and encouraging the enjoyment of the

with darker cloth on spine and corners.  Speckled edges.  Lightly scratched
and edgeworn.  Owner's embossed stamp.  Overall very tight and clean.  Gives
the history of the county from earliest times but concentrating on
1875-1925.  Chapters on  topography and geology, Indian times, discovery and
settlement, individual towns, organizations, professions, etc.   1,060 pp.
These volumes give complete history; volumes III-IV consist of short
