Combe, Andrew.
"OBSERVATIONS ON MENTAL DERANGEMENT: Being an Application of the Principles
of Phrenology to the Elucidation of the Causes, Symptoms, Nature, and
Treatment of Insanity"

Boston: Marsh, Capen & Lyon; 1834.
First American edition.

A curious book -a real attempt to reform the medical thinking about
insanity, the only problem being that Combe wanted to replace it with
Phrenological principles. Curious it may have been, but it has also been
called brilliantly written and was a very popular text and a real influence
in its day. Combe (1797-1847) was an ardent admirer of that indefatigable
pair of European phrenological champions- Drs. Gall and Spurzhiem. He
founded the Phrenological Journal in 1823, and was also president of the
Phrenological Society. Hardcover. 6"x9", 336 pages; bound in the original
pebbled cloth. Some cover wear and soil, a few minor spine chips; some
minor internal foxing. 19th century ownership label of Dr. S.E. Lawton
affixed to the front pastedown. [29402] $325.00
