1. Carrington, John B. & George R. Hughes. THE PLATE OF THE WORSHIPFUL
COMPANY OF GOLDSMITHS. Oxford University Press:1926. The Goldsmiths'
Company holds an outstanding and important collection of 16th-19th century
English silver. A handsome, scholarly and well-illustrated
catalog. Hardcover. 9"x12", 158 pages, plus 85 b&w plates; a very nice
copy. [16027] $400.00

2. Ellis, Hubert Dynes. A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ANCIENT SILVER PLATE
BELONGING TO THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF CLOTHWORKERS, with three
illustrations and a table of maker's-marks. London; 1891. A nice collection
of silver, illustrated in three group photos, but what is really unusual
about this little catalog is the fact that the illustrations are three real
photographs mounted on a stiff linen backing. An awkward way of presenting
photographs, but perfectly appropriate for the Clothworkers' Company.
Hardcover. 6.5"x8.5", 21 pages plus 3 folding real photographs mounted on
folding linen plates, with facing text descriptions and two pages of marks.
Light cover wear and a little rubbing, the leather on the thin spine is
flaking off; some internal soil and spotting; the photos on the folding
plates have split along the fold seam. [03252] $250.00

3. Ellis, Hubert Dynes. A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ANCIENT SILVER PLATE
BELONGING TO THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF MERCHANT TAYLORS; with two
illustrations and a table of maker's marks. London; 1892. A charming small
Company survey, with the plate illustrated in 2 group photos. The
illustrations are real photos mounted on linen, which seems appropriate for
a company of tailors... Hardcover. 7"x9", 21 pages plus 2 b/w real
photographs mounted on linen plates. Pebbled blue covers with a gilt
armorial decoration showing two camels rampant and a sheep... Some wear,
but a nice copy. [04925] $250.00

4. Howard, Montague. OLD LONDON SILVER. Its History, Its Makers and Its
Marks. New York; Charles Scribner's Sons: 1903. One of the earlier English
regional studies, if you discount parish surveys. The book today may be
more charming than useful in many ways, but it does provide a survey of
types of silver (for that is how it is arranged) including- cutlery, salts,
cups, tankards, bowls, lighting, hollow ware, salvers, cake baskets,
cruets, serving pieces, and there is also a chapter on frauds. The book
also features one of those antique concepts that makes one glad to live in
the 21st century- six gilt-colored illustrated plates. It's not so much
that the heavy gilt wash they apply over the monochrome illustration drowns
out all detail, although it does... it's more the overall psychedelic
birthday cake-effect that is disturbing. For all that, a cool book still,
after all these years. Hardcover. 8.5"x11.5", 405 pages, 6 colored plates
and 173 b/w illustrations; bound in old marbled boards with a newish
leather spine; a plain but serviceable binding. Light wear. [03169] $150.00

5. Jones, E. Alfred. THE CHURCH PLATE OF THE DIOCESE OF BANGOR. London;
Bemrose and Sons: 1906. An exhaustive survey of antique Welsh plate from
this somewhat scattered diocese which includes Llandudwen, Clynnog,
Llandwrog, Llanberis, Mallwyd, and of course Bangor itself, with its
cathedral. This catalog includes several Elizabethan-era pieces, as well as
a good selection of 17th and 18th century pieces, all carefully
photographed. Jones provides a detailed commentary on the silver itself and
the stylistic trends in Welsh silver they illustrate; he also has a few
words to say about the then-prevalent practice of "converting" old silver
to more "useful" or "pretty" forms... Hardcover. 9"x12", 160 pages, plus 34
b/w plates; covers with moderate soil and light spots; corner bump. [03168]

6. Jones, E. Alfred. THE OLD ROYAL PLATE IN THE TOWER OF LONDON including
the Old Silver Communion Vessels of the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula
within the Tower. Oxford; Fox, Jones & Co.: 1908. A catalog of 22 pieces of
plate in the Tower, the earliest being the 13th century Coronation Spoon,
followed by an assortment of salts, tankards, dishes and maces from the
17th century. Jones' descriptions are as detailed and interesting as usual
-perhaps more detailed and interesting, as he was working in The Tower and
may have been worried about the possible consequences of disappointing his
Royal readers... Hardcover. 9"x11", xxxiv + 79 pages with 6 line
illustrations, plus 22 gravure plates. Bound in period red pebbled cloth
with red cloth spine and tips; gilt title. Light internal soil, a few
spots, pages lightly toned, etc., but a nice copy. [03172] $400.00

7. Jones, E. Alfred. THE GOLD AND SILVER AT WINDSOR CASTLE. Letchworth;
Arden Press: 1911. Edition limited to 285 copies. Revolutions, wars, Royal
debts- all have conspired to devastate the Royal Collections of antique
silver in most European countries, with the exception of Russia. The other
exception is England, whose Royal Collection is surveyed here by that
quintessential English collection-monger, E. Alfred Jones. What can one say
about the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle? It's pretty nice stuff... and
elegantly presented to boot, in a book large and heavy enough to pave a
driveway with. Hardcover. 13"x17", lxiv + 241 pages, plus 103 b/w plates.

8. Oman, Charles. CAROLINE SILVER, 1625-1688. London; Faber & Faber:1970.
The period of the reign of Charles I, the Commonwealth and the Restoration
of Charles II was one of great turmoil, uncertainty and change, and this is
reflected in the silver of the period. Charles Oman has written a
definitive scholarly study of the history of silversmithing in England
during this sixty year period, illustrated with numerous fine examples of
surviving pieces. A highly recommended study of an exciting and interesting
period, with a finely researched and written text. Hardcover. 6.5"x10",
73 pages plus a color frontispiece and 96 b&w plates, dj. [19812] $65.00

9. Oman, Charles. ENGLISH CHURCH PLATE 597-1830. London; Oxford University
Press: 1957. Although there have been many good regional studies of English
church plate, this is the first full-length study of the church plate of
England and Wales as a whole. Noted silver scholar Charles Oman addresses
both the historical and artistic development of English ecclesiastical
plate in this well illustrated, massive monograph. Hardcover. 7.5"x11", 326
pages of text plus 200 b/w plates, dj; small circular sticker residue spot
on endpaper, else a near fine copy in a jacket with several tears. [02896]

Special limited, signed edition of 40 copies, printed on papier cheval
chinois and bound in full leather-
10. Watts, W.W. OLD ENGLISH SILVER. London; Ernest Benn, Ltd.:
1924. Many decades after it was written, Watts' work retains its
usefulness as a guide to the development of English silver. He took a
chronological approach, treating separately the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval
periods, the 16th century, the 17th century to the end of the Commonwealth
and then the 17th century of the Restoration, the 18th century to the end
of the reign of George II, and then the Reigns of Georges III and IV. He
also includes three chapters on ecclesiastical plate. As Watts notes, he
tried to "set out in an orderly manner the history of the art of the
silversmith in this country and its developments... how all the productions
of the silversmith were part and parcel of the life of the people... (and)
the origin of the various styles of form and ornament". W.W. Watts was
Keeper of the Department of Metalwork at the Victoria & Albert Museum and
author of numerous books and catalogs on antique silver. Hardcover.
9.5"x13", xxx + 149 pages of text plus 134 b/w plates. Covers with light
wear and moderate soil; endpapers lightly browned, contents fine, and
overall a handsome copy. [03690] $400.00
