1.         The Masterly Courtroom Speeches of Lord Erskine
Erskine, Thomas Henry, Lord [1750-1823]. [High, James, Editor].
Speeches of Lord Erskine, While at the Bar. Chicago: Callaghan &
Company, 1876. Four volumes. Octavo (5-3/4" x 9-1/4"). Original cloth
with gilt titles and black-stamped rules. Light rubbing with minor
fraying to spine ends and corners. Front hinge of Volume I cracked but
secure. Early owner signatures to preliminaries, interiors otherwise
clean. An appealing set. $150.
* Containing of some of the most brilliant forensic orations in
English, this collection was later reprinted by the Legal Classics
Library. Erskine was "probably the greatest advocate who ever
practiced at the English bar," who "at once made his way by his
eloquence.": Walker, Oxford Companion to Law 429.

2.     Early History of American Slavery by a Notable German Historian
Holst, H[ermann], von. The Constitutional and Political History of the
United States. Translated From the German by John J. Lalor. Chicago:
Callaghan and Company, 1889. Eight volumes. Octavo (6" x 9"). Original
cloth with gilt titles and black-stamped rules. Light rubbing with
minor fraying to spine ends and corners, a few minor stains to boards.
Front hinges of Volumes I cracked but secure, binding detached from
Volume V. Early owner stamps to preliminaries. Some discoloration to
endleaves, interiors otherwise clean. $250.
* The title of this magisterial study is misleading. It, in fact, a
history of the slavery question in American politics to 1861. The
scope of this study is indicated by the volume titles: I: 1750-1833,
State Sovereignty and Slavery; II: 1828-1846, Jackson's
Administration--Annexation of Texas; III: 1846-1850, Annexation of
Texas--Compromise of 1850; IV: 1850-1854, Compromise of 1850--Kansas-
Nebraska Bill; 1854-1856, Kansas-Nebraska Bill--Buchanan's Election;
Volume VI: 1856-1859, Buchanan's Election--End of 35th Congress;
Volume VII: 1859-1861, Harper's Ferry--Lincoln's Inauguration. Volume
VIII: Index. Von Holst was a German historian who taught at the
University of Freiburg. He lived in the United States during the late
1850s, where he observed the slavery question firsthand. He even
attended John Brown's trial in 1859. He was a visiting professor at

dampstaining throughout. Minor worming to binding and a few leaves
with negligible loss. Handsome woodcut initials, Somaschi centaur
device to title pages. Minor worming and signature to Tractatus
Criminalis title page, lower section repaired with no loss. A pleasant
copy. $850.
* Includes indexes. Later editions of studies concerned with the Roman
system of criminal law by the important Venetian jurist. These were
published originally in 1565 with the titles Practica et Theorica
Causarum Criminalium and Tractatus Aureus Defensionem Omnium Reorum
Adversus Quascunque Accusationes et Inquisitiones pro Quibuscunque

* Commentaries on the books of the Corpus Juris Civilis that deal with
the inheritance and succession of property. Uncommon. OCLC locates one

6.    16th Century Printing of St. Germain's Doctor and Student
[St. Germain, Christopher]. The Dialogs in English, between a Doctor
of Divinity, and a Student in the Lawes of England. Newly Corrected
and Imprinted, with New Additions. [London]: [Richard Tottell],
[1580]. [i], [2]-176, [4] ll. 24mo. (3-3/4" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary
sheep, raised bands, blind stamped. Worn, head of spine chipped, with
small portion missing and a few wormholes. Hinges starting but secure.
Endpapers detached, printer's waste at rear. Some worming in margin,
not affecting text. Lower right hand corner of one leaf missing, not
affecting text. Annotations on last leaf. Woodcut title-page. Ex-
library, with bookplate. A solid copy. $3,000.
*  A very important work in the development of equity, Doctor and
Student appeared in numerous editions. It was frequently cited and
influenced generations of legal writers down to Blackstone and later.
St. Germain criticizes legal rules, and elucidates the law of reason
and nature, as well as the foundations of the common law. Catalogue of

* Third edition. "Elegance of diction, appropriateness of
illustration, and novelty of method combine to make Eunomus a most
attractive and instructive book. The origin and spirit of legal
principles, the practice of the Courts, and information of general
professional interest, are carefully examined and soundly explained."
