We offer today two interesting and early Connecticut items:
Barber, J. W. HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF NEW HAVEN, (CONN.) FROM ITS
EARLIEST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT TIME. COLLECTED AND COMPILED FROM
THE MOST AUTHENTIC SOURCES. New Haven: J. W. Barber, 1831-32. First
edition. Duodecimo, faded brown cloth with gilt spine lable. 120pp.,
the last 12 added in 1832. With six attractive hand-colored
engravings, a hand colored map as frontispiece, and a partially colored
plan. Howes calls for six plates and a map. The additional plate is
the plan of New Haven facing page 96. Engravings in the text. Good
or better in original cloth with leather label. About 20 percent of
the lable is missing. There is a chip in the cloth at the top of the
spine, and the back joint is starting. The plate not called for has
dark offsetting in the margins, probably from some sort of bookmark;
the tissue guard protected the image. One plate has minor damage at
the fore-edge. Former nineteenth century owner's name boldly written
on front paste-down. Howes B125, Sabin 3323. With the names and
professions of the inhabitants of New Haven in 1748, and a list of the
planters. $700.00
