Drama (French) -- Illustrated -- includes cast list as presented
at Knickerbocker Theatre in NYC in October 1900, led by Maud
Adams as "l'Aiglon" (actress played a boy) -- a play by author of
Cyrano de Bergerac, set in Austria in post-Napoleonic era
(1830-1832) & dramatizing tragic final years of young Napoleon II
(1811-1832), who was Duke of Reichstadt ("L'Aiglon"), son of
Napoleon I and Archduchess Maria Louisa of Austria -- English
text "adapted" from French by Louis N. Parker -- an earlier
edition of book, published in French, tied in with Sarah
Bernhardt's performance of play on Continent -- this R.H. Russell
imprint was first edition of book in English in America --
English language.  First US [English language] edition (Same Date
on title-page & copyright-page).  Hardcover.  No dust jacket
(none issued).  262 pages: 2 black & white plates (frontis
L'Aiglon boyhood portrait, another as young man facing page 194)
-- there may be variant bindings (various Internet descriptions
include: portrait at frontis, another before Act. 1; frontis
portrait of Maude Adams in costume; portrait frontis & several
interior plates; 261, [1] pages + plate).  Binding height: 8-
1/4".  Navy blue full cloth, decorative gold-stamping (Napoleonic
scepter on spine, Napoleon's coat of arms on front board in field
of bees & border with floral corners -- bee motif repeated on
copyright-page), top leaf-edges gilt, others uncut (deckle
edges).  Book Very Good: name penned on front free end paper,
moderate bumping & rubbing to fore-corners & spine-top/bottom,
light spotting to front & back, front gilt somewhat dulled (spine
more so), spine slightly cocked, news clipping laid in (browning
pp. 126-7), 2 magazine clippings (photos of Rostand?) pasted to
back fixed end paper.  Binding strong & tight, insides o/w Fine.
