Proctor, Alexander. SCULPTOR IN BUCKSKIN, AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALEXANDER
PHIMISTER PROCTOR.

Norman; University of Oklahoma Press: 1971. Proctor was a
Canadian-American sculptor, born in 1862 and working in Western themes and
with animal motifs. He grew up in the West and traveled and hunted all
over the West and much of Canada, and relates tales of his life and work
with verve, candor and outspokenness. While in Oregon he began work on the
model for a bronze statue-

"There were plenty of possible models, and I struck a bargain with a
six-foot three cowboy named Red. Red was one of the most colorful
characters around Pendleton. If anyone gave him five dollars and a drink
of whiskey, he would ride one of the buffaloes. The cayuse I was using for
a model was a walleyed brute, a direct offspring of the devil. One day
when Red brought him into the studio to pose, he nearly kicked my hat off
my head with his left hind foot without seeming to move a muscle. The
studio was only fourteen by sixteen, just large enough for a horse and two
men if everyone was quiet. With a kicking and bucking horse, there was
only room for the horse and one man, and that wasn't me. I had sometimes
had trouble in close quarters with wild animals but had always managed to
save myself and my model. That time all I wanted to save was my hide.
Stovepipe, splinters, boxes, table, and high profanity flew around for a
time until Red finally got the beast settled down. Red insisted that I
would be able to climb all over the critter in a week, but I had no
intention of trying it".

Hardcover. 9"x7.5", 266 pages, b/w illustrations, slipcased. Light wear.
