Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7139 ) Simpson, Paige Shoaf and Jerry H. Simpson, Jr.. TORN LAND.
[Lovingston, VA]: [Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Book Committee],
(1970). First printing, Full cloth, Octavo, x, 429 pages, Black & white
photographs, 1 map. Very good in a good dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar
protector.
Journalistic account of the devastation of Nelson County, Virginia by
Hurricane Camille's torrential rains on the night of August 19-20, 1969. It
consists mainly of accounts told to the authors by survivors. A very honest
and unvarnished assessment of the disaster and how it was handled by
authorities and county residents. Presents a remarkable case study of both
the fortitude and the failings of humans when disaster strikes. Bound in
dark green cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine lettering. Book has a
few shallow edge wrinkles to cloth at spine ends. Also has faint brown water
tide marks along lower 1/2" of front pastedown and front free endpaper, but
not evident on the cloth binding. Otherwise the book is clean and sound,
free of prior ownership marks. The jacket is bright, with minor edge wear at
extremities and light brown dampstaining visible only on the reverse side of
front panel, front flap, and spine. No sign of dampstaining to the binding
of the book itself. $100.00
