Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 6757 ) Schuyler, Montgomery [Bruce Rogers, designer]. THE WOOLWORTH
BUILDING.
New York: Privately Printed, 1913. Limited edition, Hardcover, Folio, [25
pages and 10 plates], Illustrations by Earl Horter. Very good.
Schuyler was an early interpreter of the skyscraper as art, and
dedicated this book to Cass Gilbert, architect of the beautiful 60 story,
terra cotta clad, Gothically ornamented building. Built between 1910 and
1913, the Woolworth building is one of New York's earliest skyscrapers and
was, for a time, its tallest. Lovely book designed by Bruce Rogers and
limited to 1,000 copies for Frank W. Woolworth's private distribution.
Elegant plates by Earl Horter show many of the Gothic architectural details
that cannot be seen from the ground, and the text describes the construction
and artistry of the building. Makes interesting comparisons with other
contemporary New York buildings, including Bruce Pine's American Surety
Building, the Banker's Trust building, and even Cass Gilbert's two earlier
New York structures--Broadway Chambers and the West Street building. Bound
in dark brown paper over boards with cloth spine, gilt stamping to both
boards, embossed architectural onlay on upper board, top edge gilt.
Tissue-guarded frontispiece engraving signed in pencil by Horter. Moderate
extremity rubs, some soil and an old price in crayon on front free endpaper.
