Chorlton, William. "THE COLD GRAPERY, from Direct American Practice: being
a concise and detailed treatise on the cultivation of the exotic
grape-vine, under glass, without artificial heat"

New York; J.C. Riker: 1853.

An interesting early greenhouse guide, much less common than Chorlton's
better-known "The American Grape Grower's Guide", the first edition of
which preceded this title by one year. Gabler notes that Chorlton gained
his experience with grapes as gardener to J.C. Green of Long Island, and
that the "Grape Grower's Guide" was a very popular and influential
treatise, going into many editions, one as late as 1911. "The Cold
Grapery" on the other hand, seems to have been limited to this single
edition. The frontispiece illustrates the grapery greenhouse Chorlton
managed for Green on Long Island.

Hardcover. 5"x7.5", 95 pages, b/w frontispiece illustrating the interior
of the Cold Grapery of J.C. Green on Staten Island, and 11 text figures
illustrating pruning techniques and five cross-sections of greenhouses.
Original embossed and gilt brown cloth, some cover soil and fading,
moderate foxing throughout. Gabler G16230. [03921] $300.00
