WHITMAN, WALT. LEAVES OF GRASS WITH TWO RIVULETS, EACH INSCRIBED AND 
SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Camden, NJ: 1876. Author's Ed.. Two volumes 
bound in matching full green morocco by Bayntun Riviere with gilt 
rules, gilt spine decorations and lettering, five raised bands, gilt 
dentelles. Author's Edition, with portraits from life. LEAVES is BAL 
21412 with 600 copies printed with most copies SIGNED by the poet on 
the title page, as is this one. TWO RIVULETS is BAL 21413 with 650 or 
600 copies printed with a photographic frontispiece of Whitman. Most 
copies, as with this, were SIGNED by the poet on the photograph with 
the additional notation in Whitman's hand: "born May 31/1819." This 
book also includes Democratic Vistas, Centennial Songs, As a Strong 
Bird, Memoranda During the War, and Passage to India. In addition EACH 
volume is INSCRIBED by the poet to "Jenny Cunningham Croly/from the 
author" above her armorial bookplate on the original yellow free 
endpaper. Jane Croly was a feminist and one of the earliest American 
newspaperwomen, writing for various New York newspapers under the 
pseudonym "Jennie June". At one time part owner of GODEY'S LADY'S 
BOOK, she specialized in women's features and was among the first 
journalists who syndicated their articles. In 1856 she called the 
first women's congress and in 1868 founded Sorosis, the only women's 
club of importance at that time. In 1889, she founded the New York 
Women's Press Club. She is a member of the National Women's Hall of 
Fame. Paper somewhat brittle, with the last page of LEAVES detached 
and tears at gutters of some leaves at the very front. But for the 
brittleness of the paper, Fine and beautifully bound.   $12,500
