Montaigne, Michael.   Essays.  London: Printed for T. Bassett, M. Gilliflower, W. Hensman, 1685, 1686, 1685. Three volumes.  First edition of the Charles Cotton translation. Contemporary binding, Restoration style, calf and sprinkled calf panels, crown within leaves blind-stamp in each corner of a rectangle, gilt-lettered and decorated spine, black leather label.  Frontis in volume one. Re-jointed some time ago, everything retained except for new endpapers. Some joints just beginning to crack but a Very Good, lovely copy.    $1250

 

Montaigne, Michael   Essays.  London: T.Basset, M. Gilliflower and W. Hensman, 1693. Second edition of the Charles Cotton translation. Three volumes, frontis in volume one. Stated "Second edition" on the title of v.2, as the copy in the Huntington Library. Early binding, mixed, full and half-calf, marbled boards. Worn, front board of v.1 detached, v.3 re-jointed using fabric, original spine retained. Contemporary notes throughout by one "Walt Waring, 1697". Trimmed so that part of the imprint of the frontis is lost. In v.1 gathering K (8 leaves) is missing. A Good copy, only.   $375
