Hon. Perry A. Armstrong
THE SAUKS AND THE BLACK HAWK WAR, WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, ETC
Splingfield [sic] Ill., H. W. Rokker, printer, 1887
First Edition, First printing.

>From Chapter I - THE SAUKS , Their Discovery and Name, to Chapter
XXXVIII - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, Armstrong is nothing if not detailed and
thorough. From the story of the Prophet, Winneshiek, or White Cloud, to the
brief biography of General Jacob Fry, Armstrong is candid and observant, making
excellent use of the resources he drew from in the composition of this history.
A word to the unwary, however; he called it as he saw it, and Anglo or Indian,
the author is very frank in his descriptions of shortcomings, as well as
strengths.

This title is frequently cited in bibliographical references to Black Hawk,
the Sauk, and the Black Hawk War of 1831-32, as well as in reference to
early Illinois (and surrounding states) history and genealogy, just to name
a few. Armstrong has endeavored to deliver an impartial and thorough history
of the events, as well as the circumstances and history behind them, and his
biographical treatment of the many parties involved is indeed impartial and
revealing.

Along with the Sauk tribe, this title contains a good deal of information on
the Winnebago (my own kinsmen), as well as the tribes of the Fox, and the
Pottawattamies. Armstrong covers the customs (including what sounds much like
burial mounds), environment, beliefs, and many other aspects of life amongst
the tribes, just as efficiently and thoroughly as he does the U.S. citizens and
military members involved in this episode of American history. It is, in many
respects, a sad tale of one of the last episodes of concerted resistance by the
Native American people to the encroachment of their lands, the destruction of
sacred places, and the end of a way of life.

Well represented in University Libraries; however, most copies are the 1977 AMS
reprint or microfilm. Several I located were listed as damaged and stored off
site. This is likely due to the vulnerable binding of this volume, which this
copy has not been exempted from. While the text is complete and unblemished, the
casing has split down both joints, leaving the boards and spine detached. The
boards and spine have some fraying at tips and ends, but the gilding is still
bright and the cloth can likely be restored.

Also, the first three leaves of the end matter, which include free end-papers,
one blank, and the title page in the front, have separated as one section.
Fortunately, the pages are not affected with the usual ragged fore edge one
often sees in this situation. The title page has several small insect holes
along the upper fore edge, and the ffep has a tear to the lower fore edge, without
paper loss. Frankly, I believe the end-papers need to be replaced when the the text
block is rebound or restored, as they are constructed of an unusually thin paper
for this purpose, likely one of several contributing factors to the fragility of
this volume.

As such, strictly a Binding Copy, but an excellent opportunity for someone with
the skill or means to restore this piece of American History.

Hardcover; 6" x 8 1/2", xvii + 1 + [7]-726 pages, including Frontis portrait
and twelve additional in-text engravings, ranging from 1/3 to 1/2 page, primarily
portraits. Brown cloth with blind-stamped and gilt decoration to boards and gilt
to spine.

Ten pages of Contents, with half of the last page listing the Engravings, and just
over two pages of 'Index to the Appendix', which contains the 'MUSTER-ROLL OF ILLINOIS
VOLUNTEERS IN THE BLACK HAWK WAR OF 1931-2', including 3 keys for: a) those who
subsequently became prominent citizens or soldiers, b) those who were killed in battle,
and c) those who were wounded.

$250.00 US

Pictures cheerfully supplied on request.
