its designation, this is actually the first American edition. The
first book devoted to the subject of evidence, "[i]t long held its
place as the chief book on this topic; and Blackstone is loud in its
praises" (Holdsworth). Indeed, Blackstone thought so highly of this
work that he apologized for not treating the subject of evidence at
length "because of the fulness and excellence of...Gilbert's treatise,
a work which it is impossible to abstract or abridge, without losing
some beauty and destroying the chain of the whole.": Blackstone,

* "This book does not profess to make 'every man his own lawyer,' as
all works of such pretensions must necessarily prove a humbug. But the
compiler claims that he has here embodied a large amount of valuable
information of interest to every lawyer, and every business man who
desires to keep up with the exigencies of the times, in a convenient
form and at a small expense, compared with the great outlay it would
require to obtain the same information from any other source.":

American Law 7967.
(Inventory # 40452)

4. Influential Treatise From the "Formative Era"
Story, Joseph [1779-1845]. [Story, William Wemore(1819-1895), Editor].
Commentaries on the Law of Agency as a Branch of Commercial and
Maritime Jurisprudence, With Occasional Illustrations From the Civil

* Third edition. Marvin praised Story's thoroughness, noting that
"[he] has everywhere illustrated the doctrines of common law, by
copious extracts from distinguished writers on Roman and Continental
law." Pound includes this title in a list of the most influential and
authoritative American treatises written during the nineteenth
century. First published in 1839, Story wrote this treatise when he
was an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and a Professor at
Harvard Law School. The "Advertisement to the Third Edition" is signed
by his son, William Wetmore Story, who added notes to cases decided
after his father's death. Pound, The Formative Era in American Law

5. Dictionary in the Manner of Rastell
Whishaw, James [1808-1879]. A New Law Dictionary: Containing a Concise
Exposition of the Mere Terms of Art, and Such Obsolete Words as Occur
in Old Legal, Historical and Antiquarian Writers. London: J. & W.T.
Clarke, 1829. viii, 342, [2] pp. Includes two-page publisher list.
Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands, lettering
piece, endpapers renewed. Light soiling to title page, light foxing to
a few leaves, minor dampstaining to fore-edges of final few leaves.
Early owner inkstamp to foot of p. 342, his signature to title page.
Markings in ink to a few leaves, interior otherwise clean. $750.
* Whishaw, a member of Gray's Inn, set out to produce a concise law
dictionary in the tradition of Rastell, which would offer rather than
a voluminous encyclopedic dictionary in the manner of Jacob's.
Although intended for for the young lawyer, this is by no means a
dictionary for novices only. Whishaw included French, Latin and
English words and phrases as well as "obsolete words" from such early
authorities as Cowell, Blount and Hale. Uncommon in the trade. OCLC
locates 16 copies. Hicks, Materials and Methods of Legal Research 248.
Catalogue of the Library of the Law School of Harvard University
(1909) II:909. Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 730.
