Vincent Voiture (1598-1648), French poet, won the favor of Richelieu,
and was one of the earliest academicians. His verse delighted the
coteries, and were the most admired of any of his contemporaries.
"His prose letters are full of lively wit, and, in some cases, as in
the letter on Richelieu's policy (Letter LXXIV.), show considerable
political penetration. He ranks with Jean de Balzac as the chief
director of the reform in French prose which accompanied that of
Malherbe in French verse." Life of Voiture, written by his nephew, M.
de Pinchesne.

Boards rubbed, with a few scuffs to volume 2, spines a bit dry, heads
a triffle worn, front board of volume 1 detached, endpapers faintly
darkened, otherwise tight with crisp and clean interiors [23684].
