WILLIAMS, William Carlos. [FIRST ACT]: WHITE MULE and
IN THE MONEY. New York: New Directions [1945]. First
Edition. Wallace A21b. Consists of 445 sets of First Edition
sheets from WHITE MULE and IN THE MONEY bound together and
issued without a new title page. SIGNED by both the author,
in his later hand, and his wife Flossie as Florence H.
Williams on the front endpaper. Laid in is a two-page
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Mrs. Williams as "Flossie" on her
husband's letterhead. In the letter dated 26 July 1961 and
addressed to Jack, she states that "Bill approves of what
you have to say about W. M. [WHITE MULE]-- as do I." She
corrects him about the spelling of her name and mentions
visiting the Burkes, concluding: "Bill has picked up a bit
since you saw him-- but I have grave doubts about his being
able to write any more. I hope I'm wrong." Also laid in is a
postcard-sized announcement from The Gotham Book Mart and
New Directions of an appearance by WCW at the book store to
celebrate the publication of IN THE MONEY. In the uncommon
rough paper dustwrapper which is chipped and split
vertically on the spine with loss but otherwise complete and
in nice condition. Books signed by WCW and Flossie are not
common, especially this title which had a rather small
printing to begin with. Very Good in a Good dustwrapper.
