"Madame de La Motte's voice alone brought on
the horrors of July 14..." -Mirabeau
_____________________________________________

It's Bastille Day and the Book Elves have decorated the Cataloging Cave
with tri-color croissants and pictures of Simone Signoret... obviously it
is time to teach them the "backstory" of the events of July 14th. Or
perhaps we should just hide the food coloring, rent the dvd of "Start the
Revolution Without Me", and call it even.

I can't help but think, though, that the Book Elves would be missing out
if they did not know a bit about the backstory, and besides, they like
bright, shiny things. So, it may be time to tell them about the Diamond
Necklace, the piece of jewelry that brought about a Revolution.

Even Napoleon once commented- "The Queen's death must be dated from the
Diamond Necklace Trial".

Mirabeau said of Jean de Saint-Remy de Valois, Comtesse de la Motte, the
instigator of the whole Affair- "Madame de La Motte's voice alone brought
on the horrors of July 14 and of October 5" (the storming of Versailles
and the subsequent slaughter of the troops there by the 'Women's Army').

We have a short illustrated story of the Countess and the necklace here-

And a selection of books about the subject, including the original
"Memoirs" of the Countess and a brief prepared for her trial by her
attorney, the hapless, besotted M. Doillot, here-
