Cambridge and the BL. FIRST EDITION. This book was translated in 1621 as: " 
Of the author and substance of the protestant church and religion two 
bookes. Written first in Latin by R.S. Doctour of Diuinity, and now 
reuiewed by the author, and translated into English by VV. Bas." It was 
printed at Saint-Omer; at the English College Press. It was a controversial 
blow struck by the most important English Catholic cleric of his period, 
and the Catholic church's most important disputant with the Anglicans. This 
book seems to be unusual in that the Latin original may be even scarcer 
than the English translation. Original vellum, manuscript title on spine, a 
very little worming on a few pages towards the rear. The worm ate the blank 
paper and in between lines, perfectly horizontal at all times. Essentially 
disturbing nothing printed, although parts of a few letters are affected in 
the middle pages between Pp. 395 to 454. A very good, near Fine copy. $1550.00
