Offering for Sale:

DOYLE, Arthur Conan. THE LOST WORLD. Being an Account of the Recent Amazing
Adventures of Professor George E. Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Professor
Summerlee, and Mr. E.D. Malone of the "Daily Gazette". London: Henry Frowde
/ Hodder & Stoughton. No Date [1914].

"New Edition", being the second issue of the Large Paper issue of the First
English edition. Quarto, original light brown cloth over bevelled boards,
titled in gilt and with a dinosaur footprint design blocked in brown.
Pictorial endpapers, 13 mounted illustrations inserted throughout the text,
including a colour frontispiece portrait of Professor Challenger, two
water-colours, and three photographs not included in the trade edition. The
first trade edition was issued on October 15, 1912 in an edition of 10,716
copies. 1000 copies of the large paper edition were printed with only 190
copies being bound in blue cloth and issued on the same day as the trade
edition. The remaining 810 sets of sheets were bound in brown cloth and
(with slightly altered preliminaries) issued in 1914.

The presentation of the large paper issue is such that it gives the
illusion of being a book of real travel; it is, however, a fantastic lost
race adventure novel of the discovery of a prehistoric world atop a plateau
in South America complete with dinosaurs, pterydactls and a race of
primitive men. A virtually fine copy of a very scarce book indeed. Green &
Gibson A37d.

$2,500.00 US. Terms: As Usual.
