front board has the early woodcut book plate of Hannah Maria Margaret
Morris. Although meant as a simplified version of Newton's theories of
optics and color for the lay reader, Algarotti meant as well, to produce a
language fit for scientific and philosophic discourse in the vernacular. In
this work he tries to link aesthetic s and scientific research into one

Revision.. "Although containing no theoretical novelty, the manner and
method of its expositions were entirely original. Astronomical phenomena w
ere for the first time described in familiar language. The book formed
Herschel's introduction to celestial science..[The Scottish astronomer,
inventor, and instrument maker's] great merit as a scient ific teacher lay
in clearness, both of thought and style, and in the extreme ingenuity with
which by means of machines and diagrams he brought the eye to help the mind
of the learner." The First English Edition was dated 1756. (DNB) Shaw &

1826. Plates misfolded with occasional tears in blank margins, once in a
plate, no loss. Tears archivally repaired, misfoldings remain. Minor

With Copper Plates / James Ferguson The Sixth Edition. 1778. [4], 247,
[1], 111 [I.e. 112], [4] P., 8 Folded Leaves Of Plates. 21 Cm. (8vo)
Dublin : Printed By James Williams. This is a text for learning up to date
astronomy as well as navigation, but meant for teen-agers. It was the
first book meant for this use published in English. It was an original
Irish work first printed in Dublin. Poggendorf I, 734. Ferguson was an
active observer and experimenter in astronomy and physics, and a member of
the Royal Academy. Estc; T071367, RLIN/Oclc I Loc in the UK [Aox],and 7
Locs in the US. [Rrr, Tyc, Cgu, Nec, Mia, Upm]and, 1 in Ireland,
[U5d]. Although the "Sixth Edition" only one other edition is noted in
American or English libraries, that of 1768. A very good copy in the
original calf boards, rebacked with calf, Mro. Label, gilt, the last plate,
on armillary spheres is missing a small portion of the last fold which
contains part of the base of the sphere, and nothing affecting the content

rationality first. Unnoted in Caillet, Duveen, Wellcome, unlocated at OCLC,
BL, COPAC, BN, H, Melvyl, Utex.Aust., CIC, NYPL, Bod., Stanf. Most of the
decorative gilt preserved, hinges repaired, OW Very Good. $775.00

12.5 cm. Page 1 is numbered 3, followed by Pp. 2, 3-185. Lemnius, a
physician, from the Dutch town of Zierikzee believed in the humoral nature
of medicine. In this book he explains his diagnostic method in which he
determines the humoral composition of each person from their visible
qualities, and thus the diseases from which they are most likely to
suffer. Understanding humoral make up of a person also makes it possible
to understand his/her personality, drives and needs. "Obgleich seine
Vorschriften hie und da nicht frei von Aberglauben sind, wie dies deutlich
aus seinen Bemerkungen über den Einfluss der Jahreszeit, der Windrichtung
