An early American edition of one of Lord Campbell's two principal
works, providing us with an unbroken biographical record from the

law, deriving from his experiences as a London magistrate and "the
most remarkable of his social tracts", closing with his
recommendation that public hangings be abolished.

First edition in English of a unique medieval law book, a bemused
Maitland wondering whether its author was a "lawyer, antiquary . .
. pedant, faddist [or] romantic" and called by Plucknett "certainly
the most fantastic work in our legal literature".

to the criminal law of Scotland, by George Mackenzie, Lord Advocate
and "a considerable scholar", as well as the man who has come down
to us as "Bloody Mackenzie" in his former role.

First edition of the sole contemporary report of Porteous' trial,
later immortalized by Sir Walter Scott in 'The Heart of the
Midlothian', the detested Porteous lynched by an Edinburgh mob
following the reprieve of his death sentence.
