lettering on the spine. Prints Carter's 9-page farewell address on
heavy paper. Copy #105 of only 300 printed and SIGNED by the former
President as "Jimmy Carter" on the title page. Half of the edition was
reserved for Carter; the other half was issued for sale by the
publisher. Quite possibly the most difficult Carter title to find and
a poorly made book. Of the half dozen copies we have examined over the
years, all were loosely stitched in their casings causing the text
block to slide up and down. This copy is no different. In addition at
the bottom outside corner of the rear cover is a small hole, @1/8" x
1/4", caused by insect damage. We have seen a copy with a slipcase
which this does not have. Still a most collectible copy of a difficult

appeared at auction in the last 25 years, the Pforzheimer copyin 1987,
that being inscribed to Carl Pforzheimer. The present copy is signed

HUNTINGTON [S. S. VAN DINE]. EUROPE AFTER 8:15 WITH TWO LETTERS BY
MENCKEN AND ONE BY NATHAN. New York: John Lane 1914. First Edition.
Notable not only as an early Mencken title but also as the first book
to be illustrated by Thomas Hart Benton with eight full-page plates.
The dustwrapper reproduces the Benton drawing on the cover of the
binding whichin this copy is in the second, usually encountered, state
stamped in black on the front and gold on the spine. Wright, who later
published under the pen name S.S. Van Dine, was the editor of SMART
SET and the spark behind this unsuccessful collaboration to depict the
night life in major European cities. This copy is enhanced with the
addition of two TYPED LETTERS SIGNEDby Mencken and one AUTOGRAPH
LETTER SIGNED by Nathan, all on AMERICAN MERCURY stationery to an Alan
Gardner of Massachusetts. In his letter Nathan states that he wrote
the pieces on Berlin and Paris; Mencken wrote the introduction,
Munich, and part of London; and Wright wrote the rest of London and
Vienna. The first of Mencken's two brief letters, dated 1928, infull:
"I suggest that you buy a Bible. You can get a superb one for $50
andit will console you all the rest of your life." Mencken's second
letter is a response to a letter from Gardner (also included)
complaining about Nathan's sudden absence from THE AMERICAN MERCURY
stating that "it seems improbable that Mr. Nathan will ever resume his
articles." Both Mencken letters are in the original envelopes. The
dustwrapper is complete with minor chipping to the spine head and a
clean separation of the front flap from the front panel, now somewhat
disguised by the mylar protector. Near Fine in a Very Good and
uncommon dustwrapper. (H. L. Mencken, Modern Firsts, George Jean

012336 WILDER, THORNTON. ARCHIVE OF 10 AUTOGRAPHED LETTERS SIGNED, 23
PAGES, TO MR. & MRS. GILBERT MILLER. A fine group of 10 letters
completely in Wilder's hand, ranging from 1 page to 4 pages and each
with a typed transcript formerly stapled to it, the earliest dated
1932 and the last 1949. All are to Gilbert Miller or hiswife. Miller
was a Broadway producer, writer, director, performer, and theatre
owner, the son of Henry Miller who opened the Henry Miller Theatre in
1918, scheduled to be torn down in March 2004 displacing its current
hitURINETOWN. In the first letter Wilder states he would be happy to
translateand adapt THE BRIDE OF TOROZKO for Miller, giving specific
details on how to improve the play including how to handle its
sympathies toward Jews: "The New York Jew is too selfconscious to
accept many of the statements in the First Act as material towards an
ultimately sympathetic point of view."In another letter Wilder thanks
Miller for sending him a script: "The French are forever charging the
Americans with sentimentality, but ... thisplay is deeply
sentimental." One letter is an extensive and detailed commentary on
plays by Sartre and Anouilh. Several letters discuss Sartre, mostly
praising him as a dramatist: "It's fascinating that he's had the
boldness to write a play laid in Mississippi. That's his idolatry of
Faulkner. It will look anti-American, but it's no worse than what is
in thepages of Faulkner and Caldwell and what is in our daily papers.
Devout Catholics hate Sartre and Communists hate Sartre. They go
gleefully to his repetitions and premieres in to start a riot." Some
browning from transcripts. Near Fine or better. (Thornton Wilder,
Modern Firsts, Autograph, Literary Firsts, Letter, Signed, Letters,
Archives, Theater) $7500.00

TYPESCRIPT WITH CORRECTIONS IN WILDER'S HAND: TWO COPIES. TWO carbon
sets of the complete typescript of Wilder's play later revised by
Wilder into a Broadway hit THE MATCHMAKER, which in turn was
transformedinto the monster musical HELLO, DOLLY!. Each of the sets
contains nearly identical corrections in ink by Wilder, approximately
forty or so, ranging from filling in a lightly inked letter to adding
a line of stage direction. In addition there are several other pencil
corrections throughout each apparently in a different hand. Near Fine
or better and highly uncommon. (Thornton Wilder, Modern Firsts,
Autograph, Literary Firsts, Manuscripts, Signed, Musicals, Theater)
$5000.00

012334 WILDER, THORNTON. OUR TOWN. New York: Coward-McCann (1938).
First Edition. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a touchstone
of American theater. After reading this play, Albert Einstein wrote a
letter to Wilder comparing OUR TOWN to Homer's ODYSSEY and
Shakespeare's HAMLET, stating: "That an American of the present day
can create with such delicacy and detachment touches the soul like a
miracle." A tight, crisp copy in a beautiful dustwrapper with minor
wear to the spine tips and a superficial scratch and tiny closed tear
on the rear panel. The cloth is mildly sunned at the spine and to the
very top edges of both covers with no effect on either the front cover
or spine blue paper label. Lovely copy in brilliant dustwrapper. Hard
to improve on this. (Modern Firsts, Pulitzer Prize, Plays, Theater,
Thornton Wilder, High Spot, Drama) $2000.00

	012341 WILDER, THORNTON. SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. A 6-3/4" x 9-1/4" formal
portrait of Wilder in middle age or beyond by an unidentified
photographer INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the subject in the lower right
corner: "For Rosalind/Ivan/with the/regards and/thanks of/Thornton
Wilder." A couple of minor smudges to two words and written on a
portion of Wilder's dark suit but still quite clear and bold. Signed
photos of Wilder of quality are distinctly uncommon. A few minor
dings. Near Fine (Thornton Wilder, Modern Firsts, Photograph, Signed
Photograph, Autographs, Signed, Inscribed, Theater) $1500.00

012340 WILDER, THORNTON (CARL VAN VECHTEN). STUDIO PHOTOGRAPH BY CARL

and his ink stamp on the verso along with his ink notations: "Thornton
Wilder: The Skin of Our Teeth" and "xxv.ll.7/Aug 18 '48." This image
shows Wilder standing with the lapels of his trenchcoat in his hands
and staring off into the distance. This pose seems to be less common
than the one of Wilder seated on a chair. Fine (Thornton Wilder,
Modern Firsts, Photograph, Carl Van Vechten, Modern Photography,
Theater) $2500.00
