For Sale from Up-Country Letters, South Lake Tahoe, California:

 

Silliman, Benjamin.  A Visit to Europe in 1851.  New York:  A.S. Barnes;  Cincinnati: H.W. Derby, 1856.  Fifth edition (printing).  Two volumes, original blue cloth, gilt, decorated in blind.  A presentation copy, on the flyleaf of v.1:  "To Mr. and Mrs. Judah McClellan with the affectionate regards of their niece, and the author.  Benjamin Silliman.  New Haven, May 29th, 1859."  Silliman   He was perhaps the most important American scientist of his time: Professor of Geology at Yale, author of a popular textbook on chemistry, founded and edited (in 1818) "The American Journal of Science and Arts".  The two trips to Europe narrated here were spent calling on scientists and studying European natural history first-hand.   The first edition was New York: Putnam, 1853 (Smith, American Travellers Abroad, 1969).  A little wear and staining, a Very Good copy.    $250
