History of Slavery and the Slave Trade, Ancient and Modern. W.O. Blake, compiler. 1860, Columbus, Ohio, published and sold by subscription by H. Miller. Copyright date 1857. Superb copy of  this book, usually found in poor condition. Original full dark-brown morocco, boards heavily embossed with decorative flower and leaf pattern, spine heavily gilt, marbled endpapers and foredge. Top and bottom edge of boards heavily rubbed; spine, joints, and tips of embossing lightly rubbed. Bottom 2" of front hinge just starting to split a little on the surface (still completely attached) otherwise hinges in good condition, binding is nice and tight. Light scattered foxing throughout. Light brown corner stain  to about the last 50 pages, could be foxing or old dampstain. Includes full page engravings and frontis. 

Covers the history of slavery from Greece and Rome through 1800s, with two-thirds of the book devoted to the history of slavery in the United States, with particular attention to the events of the 1850's. Appears to be objective in its aspirations, but definitely written from a pro-abolitionist stance. A fine pre-Civil war document and reference book, ideally demonstrates the state of the country and the slavery debate on the eve of war. Exceptionally attractive...For bibs only $325.
