The much expanded second edition of Mitford's principal work,
important to the literature of equity and widely praised, in
Holdsworth's words "a difficult task [and] by far the best book on
th[e] subject which had yet appeared"; with the half-title.

First edition of one of the earliest biographical works of the
English judicial system, and the first really substantial biography
of England's Lord Chancellors, accompanied by an examination of
their Anglo-Saxon antecedents and the Court of Chancery.

Conceivably an unrecorded variant of the sole edition, "a
respectable authority" in Kent's words, based on the manuscript
corrected by Pollexfen, the famed Whig later Attorney General and
Chief Justice of Common Pleas; Thomas Wyndham's copy.

An able work by the future Supreme Court justice and the lawyer
most qualified to write it, Potts having served as the court's
clerk for the preceding ten years and just appointed by the
Chancellor with two others to revise the Court's rules.
