1.  AUSTIN, John.  Lectures on Jurisprudence or the Philosophy of
Positive Law. Fifth Edition, Revised and Edited by Robert Campbell.
Two Volumes.  John Murray, Albemarle Street, London, 1885. Original cloth, 
quite worn, joints cracking, front hinge of volume
two badly cracked, considerable pencilling; a just usable set only.

The received edition of Austin's magnum opus, appearing
posthumously through the efforts of his wife, Sarah Austin, based
on his lectures delivered decades before at the University of
London; with John Stuart Mill's notes.

2.  AUSTIN, John.  On the Uses of the Study of Jurisprudence.  John
Murray, Albemarle Street, London, 1863.  Modern morocco, title
dusty, clipped and repaired, the presentee's identity lost , the
presentation ("Respectfully / presented / by / S Austin") intact.

Presentation copy from Austin's widow, Sarah Austin, of the rare
and only separately published issuance of the Opening Lectures to
Austin's courses at the Inner Temple and London University; no copy
in OCLC or RLIN in this country.

3.  BENTHAM, Jeremy.  The Rationale of Reward.  Published by John
and H.L. Hunt, Tavistock Street, Covent Garden, London, 1825. Contemporary

First edition in English of one of Bentham's earliest works
(written before 1782), "important and original" in seeking to
control behavior through rationally determined rewards, with
particular application to the legislature and the courts.

4.  [BENTHAM, Jeremy].  A Fragment on Government; Being An
Examination of what is delivered, On the Subject of Government in
General, In the Introduction to Sir William Blackstone's
Commentaries:  with a Preface in Which is Given a Critique of the
Work at Large.  Printed for J. Sheppard, W. Whitestone, J. Hoey
[etc.], Dublin, 1776.  Some embrowning, but quite crisp, in a

Bentham's first substantial work, one in which he critically
examines Blackstone's political philosophy and introduces the
utilitarian principle which was to inform his own jurisprudence,
this edition used for the two principal succeeding editions.

The analytical schema underlying--and forming the heart
of--Blackstone's "Commentaries", providing us with the syllabus
used by Blackstone for his Vinerian lectures at Oxford, crafted
over many years as the first university lectures on English law.

The last edition undertaken by Edward Christian, who had succeeded
Richard Burn as the editor of the 'Commentaries' following
Blackstone's death and who, by some decades, preceded Maitland as
Downing Professor of Law at Cambridge; with the half title.

One of the most desirable of all the early editions, famous for its
inclusion of thirteen full page engravings, the first of only two
editions to have them, including those of Coke, Fortescue, Hale and
Mansfield, among many others.

A pretty set of the last edition undertaken by Edward Christian,
who had succeeded Richard Burn as the editor of the 'Commentaries'

The first authorized octavo edition (its format followed in all
successive editions save one), the first such to be printed at
Oxford, and the first to appear under Strahan and Cadell's imprint,
following Blackstone's sale to them of the copyright.
