Associes 1775. New Edition. Three quarto (7-1/2" x 10")
volumes bound in contemporary mottled calf with matching
morocco spine labels and gilt spine decorations; all edges
marbled. Illustrated with an engraved portrait, 7 engraved
plates, engraved vignettes, and 4 folding maps (North
America, West Indies, East Indies, and South America).
Raynal, educated by Jesuits, published the first edition of
this work in 1770. Raynal's name did not appear on the title
page until the third edition in 1780 when the book was
burned by the public executioner and an order was given for
the arrest of its author. Raynal was assited in the writing
of this, his most important work, by the encyclopedist
Diderot among others. Kress 7157. Sabin 68080. Small early
bookplate of Ricardo Heredia, Injeniero Civil, Malaga on the
front pastedown of each volume. Contents generally clean;
bindings with wear: spine ends chipped with loss and corners
worn with some scattered erosion to the leather on the
boards. A Very Good, tight set. $1500.00
