8vo. Hardcover in cloth & paper-wrapped boards. First Edition.

Signed by Howard Thurman on the title page. Also handwritten inscription 
signed "H&S" believed to be in the hand of his wife Sue Bailey Thurman.

Howard Thurman (1900-1981), was a minister, educator, and civil rights 
pioneer as well as an author, philosopher, and theologian. His books 
were a great influence on Martin Luther King, Jr. and helped to form the 
philosophical foundation for the nonviolent civil rights movement. He 
organized The Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco 
and was the first black dean at Boston College.

Included is a handwritten Meditation signed by Howard Thurman (5.75" x 
9" sheet written on both sides & folded twice). Plus the program for the 
April 10, 1981 Memorial Services Celebrating the Life of Howard Thurman 
(Single sheet folded once to make four pages with two additional folds 
by former owner). Also, eleven handwritten letters from the 1970s by 
both Howard & Sue Bailey Thurman. And, three pages from Sue Bailey 
Thurman's 1949 datebook regarding various subjects from Howard's view of 
Harry Truman to his childhood remembrances.

Book is cocked with soil to top edge. Text clean & black & white photo 
illustrations bright. Jacket very good with small 1/8" tear at top of 
front panel & light shelf wear.
