An early salvo in the eighteen-year litigation over the will of
James Allaire, the noted marine engine manufacturer (and associate
of Robert Fulton), with allegations of forgery and destitute
children and considerable fee-generating legal chicanery.

marbled boards, a bit rubbed, but generally a very good, clean

First edition of Austin's first major work, of pervasive impact on
Anglo-American law over much of the last two centuries, one which,
in the words of H.L.A. Hart (who edited the 'Province' in 1954),
"established the study of jurisprudence in England".

The facsimile re-issue of the first edition printed at Oxford
between 1765 and 1769; with four brief scholarly introductions, one
for each volume.

5.  [BRANDEIS, LOUIS D.].  Postcard, measuring approximately 3 1/2
by 5 1/2 inches, depicting a youthful Louis Brandeis, a
oval-framed, head and shoulders pose with a straight-ahead gaze,
his name in English, below which is a dated legend in Rashi script. Amishpat, 
Sofia, [1917?].  Somewhat faded, worn and crinkled, a few
creases, but clearly legible, the image of Brandeis easy to make

A rare piece of Jewish iconography, celebrating Brandeis' Zionest
involvement (the legend translatable as "The foremost Judge in all
Israel / Hanukah 1917") soon after his Supreme Court appointment
and the founding of the American Jewish Congress.

7.  [CHATHAM, BURKE AND ERSKINE].  Celebrated Speeches of Chatham,
Burke, and Erskine, to which is added, the Argument of Mr.
Mackintosh, in the Case of Peltier. Not in Cohen.  Key and
Biddle--23 Minor Street, Philadelphia, 1835.  Contemporary calf,
crimson morocco label, gilt, rubbed, title browned, some staining
towards the beginning of the volume, else a good copy. [71822]

A selection of seventeen speeches, including Erskine' defense of
Thomas Paine, those of Chatham (William Pitt) at the time of the
American Revolution, and Burke's over the period from 1774 to 1778.

Thomae Wight, [London], 1602.  Modern 1/2 brown morocco, neat
repair to title (not affecting legibility), a bit dusty, discreetly
ex-library, yet a good copy; seven copies in ESTC. [71885 L79E]

First edition of part three of Coke's Reports and the last part to
contain what Plucknett has called Coke's "choicest cases", after
which the methodology and presentation of the Reports change
significantly; with Coke's lengthy preface in English.

Farr's Elements of Medical Jurisprudence [and three other works],
A Digest of the Law Relating to Insanity and Nuisance . . . To
Which Is Added . . . Erskine's Speech for James Hadfield [etc.].

Street [etc.], Philadelphia, 1819.  Contemporary tree calf, worn,
heavily foxed and browned, the binding crudely reinforced; a usable

Presentation copy ("T.C. McCord from his friend Dr Cooper") of
Cooper's pioneering work, the first on forensic medicine published
n this country, reprinting several important English works and
adding his own notes and digest of insanity law.

Nijhoff, The Hague, 1868.  Modern tan cloth, the original front
wrap laid down, a very good, untrimmed and partly uncut copy.

First edition of Grotius' first substantial legal work,
miraculously rediscovered in manuscript in the 1860's, the twelfth
chapter of which comprised his famed "De Mare Liberum".
