BURKE, Edmund. /REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, and on the
Proceedings in Certain Societies in London, Relative to that Event, in a
Letter intended to have been sent to a Gentleman in Paris./ Freshly, and
professionally, re-bound in royal blue leather. Printed for. J. Dodsley,
in Pall-Mall, London. 1790. 2nd edition, 8vo, pp. iv, 356. The spine is
in compartments, ornamented with gilt rules and fleur-des-lis; titling
in gilt on morocco label.

Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was born in Dublin, educated at Trinity
College, and served, but did not complete, articles as a lawyer at the
Middle Temple, London (1750). He then travelled in France and, in 1755,
published his first work /Vindication of Natural Society/. In 1759 he
started the /Annual Register/ and contributed to it until 1788. In 1765
he was elected to Parliament and quickly become known as an outstanding
orator. After a political career in which he was involved, oftimes
instrumental, in every major issue of the day, he published, in
November, 1790, the present title. "It is not to be wondered at that a
man who desired justice for America but rejected Jefferson's doctrines,
would be deeply stirred by the events [in France] of 1789". (Printing
and the Mind of Man, #239). The "Reflections" achieved immediate success
all over Europe. This, the second edition, was published but a few days
after the first, to be succeeded within a few years by four other
editions, so popular was the work. This copy has new marbled endpapers
which compliment nicely the luxurious dark blue binding. There is a
faint remnant of a "discard" stamp to the reverse of the title page,
which can barely be discerned on the title page itself. Some skilful,
but barely noticeable, repairs to the preliminary leaves; else the
contents are remarkably clean, bright and totally unmarked, save for the
odd bit of foxing. Overall, a very nice copy indeed of an important and
influential book.
