[AUTOMOBILES]. EARLY AUTOMOBILE REGISTRATION from the
state of Connecticut 1905. Hartford, CT: 1905. Printed
official state of Connecticut form (9-1/2" x 7") filled out
in type and signed by Theodore Bodenmain(?) for the Office
of the Secretary. An extremely early automobile registration
form dated 17 May 1905 for Wilmot C. Wheeler of Bridgeport
with a large state gold seal affixed, this being Certificate
No. 3174, meaning that only 3173 automobiles had been
registered in the state before this. The state began
registering autos in 1903, one of the first states to do so,
preceding even Michigan's Detroit which did not register its
first vehicle until July of 1905. In 1901 Connecticut also
enacted the first traffic law in the United States, limiting
speeds to 15 miles per hour in the country and 12 miles per
hour in the city. Wheeler was an important local figure, as
one would expect an owner of an automobile in that time
period to be. A foundation exists today in his name in
Southern Connecticut. Some creases from neat folding. Fine
and very scarce. $500.00
