The draawings in this album are all haiga, or swift drawings meant to
accomany Haiku. They are painted in the finest Shijo style, in direct
descent from those of Goshun, as seen in Goshun's travel diary of Buson.
Although Mitchell states that he was probably a student of Koin, "some
sources state that he was a pupil of Goshun,[ founder of the Shijo
school,] and Nakai Ranko". The first is broadly hinted at by the character
and quality of these drawings.A famous later Shijo book in first edition,
by a famous master. Rare in Western collections. Including Mitchell there
are 6. Beres did not have one, and none have been at auction for some 75
years. See Mitchell P.102-103. See P. 580 for a plate after Kocho in a
famous anthology. Original covers and title slips. Title pages in both
volumes. Light age fading at edges of covers of both volumes, original
maroon flexible clothlike paper. Fine printing and state. $3500.00
