BELL, Charles./ ENGRAVINGS OF THE ARTERIES, ILLUSTRATING THE SECOND
VOLUME OF THE ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY, BY J. BELL, SURGEON/. Bound in
patterned green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Published by T. N.
Longman and O. Rees, London. 1801. 1st edition. Small 4to, pp. [4], 49.
[2]. The boards are a bit bumped, and show very light soiling & a touch
of rubbing. Hinges and joints tight: very good condition.

Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842), discoverer of the distinct function of
nerves, was educated at Edinburgh, and published, inter alia, /A System
of Dissection/s (1798) which, like this title, he illustrated with his
own engravings. The "J. Bell" referred to in the title, was his brother,
John Bell (1763-1820), who was a surgeon, and author of the book these
plates were meant to illustrate. This copy bears the signature, near the
top right of the title page, of George Bullen (1816-1894), the keeper of
printed books at the British Museum, as well as a presentation
inscription, dated 1957, from Noel R. Rawson, to Dr. Robert Beamish (late
editor of The Canadian Journal of Cardiology). There is a Latin
inscription in ink, to the bottom edge of page 7, perhaps in the hand of
George Bullen. All ten finely-detailed engravings, each drawn by Charles
Bell, are present and delicately coloured. What is even more
extraordinary is the presence of what one must presume are two tabbed-in
original water colour paintings, byCharles Bell, of plates I and II,
from which the plates for this book were engraved. Plate I (Fore and
Back Views of the Heart) is hand-drawn and coloured, with each principal
vein, or artery, lettered by hand with the corresponding brief
description, also lettered by hand. Plate II (The Diaphragm) is folded
at the bottom and right side, and is somewhat larger, with two small
pieces missing from the top edge (with resultant lack of a few
hand-letterd words). The engraved plates are protected by tissue
guard, now quite foxed. The book concludes with a page of ads, and an
errata page. (031109)
