collection of 7 works of  poetry and prose of a major Dutch literary 
figure. He was not only a poet and humorist, but also a lawyer, diplomat 
and keeper of the great seal. His first sucess as a lawyer was in defending 
a client accused of withcraft, which made him famous. The titles of each of 
the books are given as: Ouderdom en Buyten leven; Hof-gedachten.; Invallen 
de Gedachten; [Koningklyke herderin] Aspasia; blyeyndig-spel; Afbeeldinge 
van 't Huwelyck Doot-kiste voor de levendige; T'Zamen Sprakk Tuschen Ziel 
en Lichaam; Tachtig Jarig Leven Huyshoudinge En Bedenkingen op Zorgvlied. 
With an engraved title page, several full page plates and folding plates as 
well as numerous half page etched illustrations, for a total of 64 etched 
pages. Cats's descriptive poetry was easy to illustrate, and to integrate 
with the text in emblem books. Adriaan van de Venne, one of the best 
illustrators of the time, who executed the drawings for most of the 
engravings in this edition, worked closely with Cats. The drawings were 
etched by the best engravers of his day, which was the golden age of Dutch 
art. One of the double-page plates shows the famous representation of 
marriage in the form of a fisherman's trap, another is set in a grave yard 
and depicts the resurrection. Although several works are emblem books, 
none  are listed as such by Landwehr. However and they are listed, as found 
in his collected works, [Alle Wercken] No:400771 on the Union Catalogue of 
Emblem Books, of McGill U., on the internet. It was first issued in a much 
shorter version in 1655. All the illustrations were cut before the author's 
death in 1660 during the golden age of Dutch illustration. Cats is one of 
the most famous Dutch poets, whose books deal with ordinary life in the 
sight of God, though with poetic charm and delicacy.   The illustratrations 
show that life in great detail with charm and skill. In this issue without 
separate title pages, but with half titles only, after the collective 
engraved title page. Netherlands STC 477 K50. Copies of this edition are 
also found at GBV, COPAC [Cambridge], OCLC notes 2 Locs of earlier issues 
containing only the first two volumes at UPM and at NDD. Original calf, 
spine with 5 raised bands. Almost all gilt has been lost, OW the binding is 
in very good strong shape. Internally fine printing and state. $675.00
