The volumes that follow come from the Delano family library, Roosevelt's
predecessors. They pertain to the Arabian horse and Arabian travels. Warren
Delano experimented in breeding Arabian with Norwegian (?) horses, and one
volume bears his extensive notes. The five volumes (four titles) are
uniformly bound and, despite light wear as noted, form an attractive set.
Because of the provenance, it would be our preference to keep these
together. Please note that the price is nett to all, and has been
substantially discounted. If not sold as a group, we would countenance
breaking the set--contact me if your interest lies in only one volume.

(TRAVEL). Upton, D. B. Gleanings from the Heart of Arabia. London, C. Kegan
Paul & Co., 1881. First edition. This copy comes from the library of Warren
Delano, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's grandfather, and bears his name and the
date 1893. 19 cm., red three-quarters levant with marbled sides by
Stikeman. viii, 399 pp. Light wear, but an attractive copy, bound without
ads. Short tear to edge of final blank.
An interesting account of Arabian travels, a rather scarce posthumous work,
unrecorded in the standard equestrian literature. Pages 269 to end pertain
to Arab horses, of which Delano was an enthusiastic breeder. An interesting
association copy.

(TRAVEL). Upton, Roger D. Newmarket and Arabia. An examination of the
Descent of Racers and Coursers. London, Henry S. King, 1873. First edition.
This copy comes from the library of Warren Delano, Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's grandfather, and bears his name with date, inscribed the year
of publication. In addition, it bears his interesting notes, largely in
pencil. 20 cm., red three-quarters levant with marbled sides by Stikeman.
xi, 211 pp., 32 pp. ads, with a colored wood-engraved frontispiece of 'Arab
Horses' by Upton after A. Dedreux, and 4 folding lithographed plates of
pedigrees at rear. Some light wear to the binding.
A rare work, comparing English and American thorouhbreds, with an
interesting and appealing provenance, given Delano's extensive breeding of
Arab horses. Huth 212.

(TRAVEL). Blunt, Lady Anne. A Pilgrimage to Nejd, the Cradle of the Arab
Race... Murray, London, 1881. Second edition, same year as first. Two
volumes, bound as those above (an appealing binding, with Arts & Crafts
touches), 19.5 cm. Some light wear to binding, one spine with two small
scars, not especially noticeable. With Warren Delano's dated inscription.

(TRAVEL). Blunt, Lady Anne. The Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates. Harper,
New York, 1879. First American edition. 21.5 cm, bound as above. Some light
wear to binding. With Warren Delano's dated inscription.

$2250 nett
