HOE.   London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick
Press, 1877.  1st  edition.  Octavo, cloth titled in gilt, shelf number 
with label remnants,
  "withdrawn" stamps and traces of labels on paste-down end papers, 
institutional stamps on p.1, stamp on top edge, uncut.  [4], 149, [2] 
pages.  Nicely printed on heavy paper. SIGNED inscription by Hoe to Peter 
C. Baker, a prominent N.Y. printer & publisher, organizer of the 
Typothetae, a printer's group dedicated to fine printing.  Hoe held many 
patents & made many improvements to printing presses which produced a 
virtual revolution in newspaper publishing.  The frontispiece to this 
volume shows his large flat bed press at work.  This portion of his 
extensive library was sold by Bangs as part I of his sale  on May 23rd, 
1887. He was the uncle (NOT the father, as is sometimes erroneously stated) 
of the famous Robert Hoe, who succeeded him as head of the family business 
and who shared with his uncle a love of books.  ("Chalcography" refers to 
engraving on copper or brass.)  Quite scarce.   $375.00
