AVERELL, G. W., & CO. : PICTURES OF LIFE AND CHARACTER IN NEW YORK. Folio,
35 cm., TP + 19 FP plates; tinted Lithos. printed and drawn by G.W. Averell
& Co., NY, Ca. 1877. The entire book is drawn in a free caricatural style
and was not for sale, but was distributed to hotels in the Northeast. It
was a vehicle for business advertisements for incoming travelers to the
bustling city of New York, the Great Metropolis. There is no other book of
this sort which about any other American city. It is a kind of comic
boosterism in a broad caricaturish style which stereotypes many ethnicities
and classes of people engaged in life on the street. The Ads paid for the
publication and were its main source of revenue. A copy for use by
Advertising salesmen, partly penciled in where space has been sold on
versos of plates. Printed on a heavier stock than usual and better in
quality reproduction than in the ordinary issue. Subjects include: The
Ferry; Chatham Street [caricatured Jewish clothing merchants]; Arrival in
New York by ship; Boarding Houses; the Stage; Immigrants arriving at Castle
Garden; the Bon Ton on parade; the Park; the Race Course; Female types and
dandies; Prize Fight; Street types; Chinese working, using opium, gambling;
Ethnic types and professions, black street sweeper featured; Street Types
[many plates]. A rare and sought after New York publication. Not in Sabin,
Murrell, OCLC/RLIn 3 Locs. similar to our description, three others
assigned other dates on internal evidence[dates in ads]. The backs of the
plates are not counted as pages here, nor by the NYPL, but two other
libraries count them; NLM gives no pagination. Lower margin a little
dusty, binding lightly water stained, OW VG. $1775.00
