ANONYMOUS RETELLING: MOMOTARO [LITTLE PEACHLING]. Kyoto, publisher unread,
Meiji 26 [1893]. 4.33 x 6.75 inches, oblong, end opened, 12 pages of color
woodblock prints and one sheet [2 Pp.] of text. Wraps, without title slip.
Complete. Perhaps the most famous Japanese fairy tale, both in Japan and
outside. This, however, is a Japanese color plate childrens' book meant for
home consumption. These preceded those meant for Western children, but are
quite rare, almost unheard of, since they were actually used by Japanese
children and essentially used up. The wraps have had new outer surfaces
added. No copies of this edition are to be found anywhere in the Western
world. Even in Japan, the only noted copy is in the National Diet Library.
Needless to say there are no copies in any American library noted in either
OCLC or LIN or the NUC for that matter. The copy has a clipped upper corner
[outside the plate line], and a little light rubbing and soiling of the
surface throughout. However the contents qualify for Very Good minus, and
the exterior is now Very Good. $1250.00
