First edition of Spinoza’s famous OPERA POSTHUMA which contains his “Ethics”
(a major statement of his philosophical thought), “De Intellectus Emendatione,
” the “Tractatus Politici,” a selection of important letters, and the
separately paginated “Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae.” Along with Spinoza’
s TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS, these two works “immortalize his name”
(PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN #153). Note: an engraved portrait was added to a few
copies some 3 or 4 years after the 1677 date. It is seldom encountered. The
single copy to appear in recent years was sold in 2001 and realized over
$64,000 with commission. See The Norman Library #1988. Kingman & Offenberg 24.
