CATLIN,  George. THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS, AND CONDITION OF THE  NORTH
AMERICAN  INDIANS.  London:  Published  by the  Author  1841  [@1892].
WRITTEN  DURING  EIGHT YEARS OF TRAVEL AMONGST THE WILDEST  TRIBES  OF
INDIANS  IN  NORTH  AMERICA,  1832-39. Two  quarto  volumes  (6-1/2" x
10-1/4")  bound in publisher's decorated cloth with gilt depiction  of
two  Native American horsemen with spears; viii, 264; viii, 266 pages.
Illustrated  with  180  superb  color-printed plates,  many  with  two
images,  including  3  maps. There were only two prior  editions  with
colored  plates, the 1866 edition issued in only about a dozen  copies
with  hand-colored plates and seldom offered on the market. When it is
it  usually  commands  upwards of $30,000. The 1876  edition  was  the
first  with color printed plates. The only other 19th century  edition
of  Catlin's important book with color plates is this one. Howes  C241
(1841+  editions);  Sabin  11536 (1841 edition); Streeter  1805  (1841
edition);  Wagner-Camp 84 (1841+ editions); Wheat, TRANSMISISIPPI WEST
84:  "Offers  an  excellent  picture of the Indian  situation  at  the
opening  of the 19th century's fourth decade." Jenkins, A FULL  HOWES:
"Catlin's  record of Indian life was the first and freshest account of
the  vanishing American Indians as they actually lived and remains one
of  the  chief sources for all later knowledge of the  North  American
Indians."  Plates and text bright and clean; bindings also bright with
thoughtful  old  repairs  to  hinges. Near  Fine,  lovely  within  and
