Pp. + 11 FP Lithos. of animals on heavier paper. The drawing flavor is
Persian, text in Ottoman Turkish. An extremely rare and early juvenile
printed in Ottoman Turkish by lithography. Except for the others in this
series the earliest Turkish juvenile. Certainly the earliest one dealing
with natural science. Not in BL [has others in this series], NUC, RLIN,
OCLC, Unloc. Pub. wraps, marbled spine, a Very Good copy. $1050.00
2. ANON. SHANGHAE ALMANAC FOR THE BISSEXTILE OR LEAP YEAR 1856, and
Miscellany. . The Port of Shanghae is in North Latitude 31 15' 41" And East
Longitude 121 w' 6"; Variations of the Needle 20' Easterly./ China New
Year. Falls on the 6th February. Shanghae : Printed at the "Herald" Office
[North China Herald], [1855] 25 cm., Completely unpaginated, but with 5
folding charts and a slip describing a plate of a pagoda of the Lin-Tse
sect, which plate is lacking. This is the last year of five and continues
the Shanghai almanac and commercial guide. Among the contents are customs
house reports, list of foreign hongs[merchant houses] in Shanghae, list of
foreign missionaries. The Miscellany begins with the "Peking Gazette" [or a
digest of the events in China of the year], a chart of "All people renting
space in Shanghae"; A Translation of a the last pamphlet brought from
Nanking by the "Rattler." "Important Observations Regarding Celestial
Principles" "Koo-San or Drum Hill"; "The Vision of Hung-Si-Tshuen and
Original of the Kang Si Insurrection" By the Rev. Theodore Hamberg ;
"Sailing Directions For the River Min." "A Trip to Nong-Po And Theen"-Thae
includes many Chinese characters and an illustration; "Contribution to the
History of the Insurrection In China", By D. J. Macgowan, M.D. The articles
total several hundred pages and include others of equal interest. Only 5
issues are known 1853-1857. RLIn locates copies at Harvard and Stanford
only, but Also at BL. OCLC, Unloc. COPAC notes a copy at Cambridge. Resewn,
including both front and rear wraps, and all other required pages, with
illustration lacking, as above. Cover and first three sheets a little water
stained, as are the last three sheets, a few pages with light imprints of
pressed ferns which had been included, OW VG. $ 1375.00

all of the maps [two need repairs at the folds], all with an institutional
stamp on their versos, it lacks the last appendix: "Catalogue of books on
China (other than philological) published on China and Japan in the English
language": Appendix C, p. 2-26. Institutional 20th century cloth. A guide
primarily for European businessmen and clergymen. It includes routes and
dates of service of European shipping lines to and from the treaty ports.
Although published in England, printed in Hongkong. All of the maps on
mulberry paper, which is, by its nature, fragile. The copy from which the
microfiche available in some libraries was made, at Harvard, lacks 21 of
them. These microfiches are usually made from the best copy available.

Engd. by J. Gantz. An unusual early Indian mission imprint. The church here
disseminates scientific knowledge for children. The text is based on the
first two volumes of Joyce's popular juvenile dialogues. Stamp of Rangoon

/ 1891. [The Story of Joseph as told by the Prophet Moses Translated into
the Malay Language and Printed in Singapore by the American Mission Press].
45 Pp. 12 cm. Original printed stiff wraps, red cloth backstrip. There is
no attribution to MacGowan in the book itself, but as I read it , it
followed his pattern quite closely. The title page adds the initials of
the translator "W. G. S." Overleaf it says : The Story of Joseph In Low
Malay. While the spelling is different, the language is the one now
spoken in Malaysia.It, however was means primarily for Chinese readers, now
speaking coloquial Malay. I have found no copies for this or any other
edition of the work at OCLC, Hollis, NYPL, Yale, LC, CIC [Midwestern
research libraries as a whole], Melvyl, BL, COPAC. An about Very Good
copy, the boards somewhat soiled and worn. $875.00

collection of hymns, numbered 1-154, with index, meant for children and
edited by Mrs. Simons, primarily for the use of the children back home and
their parents, since a group of hymns for mothers is included at the back.
Some of the newly added hymns may have been written by Mrs. Simons. Not at

Pp., 17 cm. Bound in original marbled wraps. Printed at Ebon, Marshall
Islands for Kusaie [now Kosrae]. The first title has not been translated,
but from inspection it is a Christian prayer book [inspected by a speaker
of the language] The second is the Epistles of John from the New Testament,
including I Corinthians, XI, 23-29 and I Timothy, III, 8-13. The missionary
B.G. Snow who settled on the island of Kusaie [or Strong's island], the
most westerly of the Carolinas group, translated all of the 19th century
publications in Kusaie. The populations in 1852 was 2000, but by the time
of the publication of D & M had dwindled to 400. The earlier works were
published by the ABS in Honolulu. They are in Darlow and Moule. In the
1860s he moved to Ebon, Marshall Islands and continued his translations and
publications in Kusaie[now Kosrae]. None of the Ebon printings are noted.
The population having decreased, much smaller editions were published. Of
the second title, OCLC finds 3 Locs [BISHOP HHA, Harv. HLS, CLEVE.P.L.
CLE]. The first title lacking at OCLC, Melvyl, CIC, UT Aust., BL, COPAC,
KVK, unnoted in Darlow and Moule [which also lacks the other title]. D & M
Vol II, P. II, P. 895-896. Original marbled wraps, spined chipped but
otherwise mint. $4250.00
10. WRIGHT, REV. ASHER: DIUHSAWAHGWAH GAYADOSHAH. [Seneca Elementary
Reader] Boston, Crocker & Brewster, 1834. 12mo, 42Pp. Front., 16 1/2P. wood
engraved vignettes. Pp. 27-42 has an English-Seneca Vocabulary. The only
such Seneca juvenile composed. First Edition. Pilling 4252. Inscribed
presentation by "Kaunadgak" to Birdsey A. Root: "Given to my grandfather by
an Indian friend." Not in Rlin or OCLC which have copies. of the 1836
edition only [Yale, Ros. Etc.], OCLC [18 Locs.of the 1836 issue, only, not
in Siebert. Rare in this issue. Light water stain, neat coloring by early
owner, one page with horizontal tear, no loss, generally Very Good. $1525.00
