(INCUNABULA) LIBELLUS DE MODO CONFITENDI ET PENITENDI. (Antwerp: Gerardum
Leeu. 1488). Sm. 4to. ff.(25) of 26 leaves, lacking the final leaf, blank except
for a printer’s device. A facsimile of this leaf has been supplied. A1 recto
with a large woodcut of a penitent and priest. Large woodcut initial on A2
recto. Bound in 19th century red morocco, ornately gilt tooled. Title leaf neatly
remargined (inner & lower margins). Old repairs to lower blank outer corners
and bottom margins of a number of leaves. Bookplates of Nathan Comfort Starr
and Frederick Spiegelberg. $4.500.00 (trade discount allowed)
A very scarce book, first printed in 1480 and followed by about 15 editions,
mostly printed in Antwerp or Deventer, by the end of the century. The text is
a manual of Ecclesiastical rules for the imposition of penances suitable to
different sins. Medievalists have attributed this work to either John of
Garland, Peter of Blois or William de Montibus. Our edition is Goff M767 (under “
Modus Poenitendi”) recording only 1 copy. BMC IX, 190 (lacking the title leaf with
woodcut); HCR 11498. Incunabula in the Dutch Libraries, #3276.
