(INCUNABULA) Brant, Sebastian. STULTIFERA NAVIS [Translated into Latin by
Jacobus Locher Philomusus]... (Basel): Johann Bergmann, de Olpe. (August 1st)
1497. 4to. 163 (of 164) leaves, lacking the last leaf which is blank. First
enlarged Latin edition. See the note below on this very rare issue with 4
additional leaves (1 large additional woodcut). Illus. with 118 woodcuts, some of which
are attributed to Albrecht Durer; in this copy all of the woodcuts have been
colored in a light yellow wash. Bound in full straight grained black morocco,
gilt (circa 1810), by the London binder J. Faulkner, with his printed binder’s
ticket. A.e.g. An attractive copy but for some discoloration due to old water
stains at the top margin of many of the leaves. A few minor marginal repairs.
19th century bookplate of C. A. and V. Baldwin. $25,000.00 (trade
discount allowed)
The second Latin edition printed by Johann Bergmann, de Olpe, who printed the
first editions in both German (“Das Narrenschiff”), 1494, and Latin, March
1st, 1497, of the famous “Ship of Fools,” a satire on the follies and vices of
the times with a wonderful series of large humorous woodcuts. Our edition of
August 1st, 1497, has additional text by Brant, Thomas Beccadelli and the
translator, Locher. Always described as complete with 160 leaves (the last blank),
our copy has 4 additional unnumbered leaves after folio CXLIIII (leaf S8).
This gathering is signed f (a long s) 4. These 4 added leaves are described in a
note in GW5061 (referencing a copy in Freiburg), and are in fact added to the
next edition printed by Johann Bergmann, de Olpe in March 1st, 1498, but are
very rarely found in the August 1st, 1497 edition. See Goff B1090; HC 3750; GW
5061.
