Who Owns Maine? Today you can answer that question at
a special price of $400, net to all. Word is that the topic of
Maine's borders remains a hot-button issue on the cocktail
party circuit, right up there with why Brad and Jen broke up,
and with this book you can be the best informed on at
least one topic...

THE RIGHT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO THE NORTH-EASTERN BOUNDARY
CLAIMED BY THEM. Principally Extracted from the Statements Laid before the
King of the Netherlands, and revised by Albert Gallatin, with an appendix
and eight maps.

by Albert Gallatin.
New York; Samuel Adams, Printer: 1840.

In 1839 the British Government had appointed Commissioners to survey the
disputed Maine boundary, and at the time Gallatin wrote this the American
Government was busily doing the same. The dispute would finally be settled
several years later under Secretary of State Daniel Webster. Gallatin,
something of a Renaissance man who had served as Secretary of the Treasury
under Jefferson, reviews the history of the dispute and explains the
competing claims.

Hardcover. 6"x9", x + 179 pages, plus 8 maps on 6 folding sheets. Bound in
old period boards with a cloth spine and leather label. Spine rather
chipped at the head and lacking a 2" portion at the base, with one
additional rip in the cloth; lacks front endpapers; slight foxing
throughout; first map with a slight tear and two panels discolored, all
maps with browned edges and some slight scattered browning. Covers somewhat
soiled and worn, and chipped at the corners. [01364]
