NEWMAN, John Henry Cardinal. SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. A
4-1/4" x 6-1/2" cabinet card albumen portrait of the
theologian who was one of the founders and prime movers of
the Oxford Movement and who later converted to Catholicism.
A familiar pose with Newman resting his head against his
hand with his elbow propped on a table. SIGNED in dark ink
below the image and over the photographer's printed name:
"John H Cardinal Newman/Aug 27 1886." Photographs signed by
Newman are scarce, as is his signature with the addition of
"Cardinal" to his name. Though the signature is over printed
matter, it is dark and clear. Small piece of the photograph
near the very left margin is chipped off, well away from the
image of Newman. Minor creasing at corners. Near Fine
