      Scarce history filled with many interesting details of this
Pennsylvania county's role in the Civil War. Troops from Schuylkill County
were among the first sent to protect Washington at the beginning of the war.
Many were experienced miners, and the county's 48th Regiment conceived, dug
and exploded the famous mine under the Confederate position at the siege of
Petersburg. There is a chapter on county resident Nicholas Biddle, an
African American, who was the first casualty of the war after Lincoln called
for volunteers. Biddle was wounded while marching through Baltimore. Another
interesting chapter concerns Pottsville native Jacob W. Haas who was
mistaken for John Wilkes Booth and nearly lynched on three occasions after
Lincoln's assassination. Information on the Underground Railroad, Lincoln's
loss in Schuylkill in the 1864 election, and much more. From a limited
edition of 400 copies. Printed blue wraps, stapled binding. Some mild
browning at edges of covers, light extremity rubs. Binding sound. Prior
